For the first time, the All India Congress Committee has acknowledged that the demand for Telangana statehood is genuine and it cannot be compared with similar demands elsewhere in the country.
“The Telangana statehood issue is completely different as it has been there for several decades. It cannot be clubbed with the demands for other smaller states elsewhere in the country. It has to be resolved separately,” AICC general secretary and spokesman Rashid Alvi said.
Referring to home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s observation in the all-party meeting that the Congress party had acknowledged the demand for two states for Telugu people, Alvi said the home minister’s statement was the real policy of the Congress party.
Alvi’s statement makes one wonder whether the Congress and the UPA government are going to present two different stands on Telangana. The Congress party may say it is for Telangana state, but the UPA government may say it might not be possible, say sources.
